Title:

Abstract:
Caring for the animal after an operation is just as important as the surgery itself. Inadequate postoperative care, besides various other complications, has the potential to cause infection. Proper postoperative care is crucial to healing. Microorganisms isolated from postoperative wound infections which could be treated successfully with a range of antimicrobial agents in the past are now becoming increasingly multi-resistant, making the infection very difficult to treat. Over the last years, methicillin-resistant Staphylococci in animals, particularly methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), have attracted considerable attention from the scientific community and human and animal health professionals. Due to the lack of prior public understanding, MRSA and MRSP have for many decades been significant causes of mortality and morbidity in hospitals; and an apparent increase in the number of MRSA/MRSP cases are now being identified in both human and veterinary hospitals, which are resistant to a number of antibiotics normally used to treat Staphylococcal infections. Because of the resistant nature of MRSA/MRSP, treatment lasts longer and can include drugs that are generally more expensive and have greater side effects.
